Trinity is the only university in Ireland that offers a course in Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilizations.

It attracts students of social and cultural diversity from Ireland and abroad. Our graduates in Ireland and internationally include lecturers working in European, UK and US universities, as well as graduates working in other areas including museum work, journalism, international relations, teaching, research, human rights and law.

Placement options

A year or semester studying abroad is one of the highlights of a student’s Trinity experience. In third year, students have the opportunity to apply to study abroad in a prestigious European university with the EU funded Erasmus programme. Alternatively, you may apply to spend your third year in leading universities in North America, Australia and Hong Kong. The department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies also has a special exchange programme with Charles University, Prague and with a number of universities in the Middle East.

  • At entry, Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilisations must be combined with one other subject.

  • In later years, you will be able to select additional subjects and electives and will have the option to graduate with Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilisations as a Single Honors degree, a Joint Honors degree with another subject, or a Major with a Minor.

As part of your application, you will be required to submit:

Minimum entry requirements

The minimum matriculation requirements refer to the basic standard of application you must meet to be considered. Anything less than this will be unsuccessful outright however meeting the matriculation requirements does not guarantee admission. The standard matriculation requirements are pass grades in English, Mathematics, a language other than English, and a full set of valid subjects for your examination system.

• 3 subjects at grade 5 at Higher Level;
• 3 subjects at grade 4 at Standard Level, to include English, Mathematics and another language.

• Present six subjects at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. Two of these subjects must be at grade C or above on Advanced GCE (A-Level) papers.

English Requirements

TOEFL: Internet based 90 (with a written score of 21).
IELTS: (Academic version) 6.5 (no individual band below 6). For Dental courses: IELTS (academic version) 7 (no individual band below 7). For Clinical speech and language studies: IELTS (academic version) 7 (no individual band below 7)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PTE Academic: a minimum score of 63 (with no section score below 59).
Duolingo: Duolingo English Test: minimum overall score of 110/160, dated since January 2020
For Dental courses and Clinical speech and language studies: Duolingo English Test: minimum overall score of 120/160, dated since January 2020.

Career Prospects


This broad humanities degree in Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilisations provides the ideal foundation for those aspiring to careers in public services, foreign affairs, diplomacy, journalism and education. Many of our graduates can be found in these and in other professions.
Students receive a rewarding education in Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic history and culture, but also instilled are more general skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving, skills which are highly attractive to potential employers.
