Why Study at NUI Galway?

  • Ireland allows two years of stay-back under the third level graduate scheme. After the successful completion of the studies, a student is permitted to stay 24 months in the country to seek employment.
  • To be eligible for this, a student must possess an Bachelor, Master or PhD degree award granted by a recognized Irish awarding body (Universities/Colleges). A student, during his/her stay-back period can also work for 40 hours/week.
  • Non-EEA students with Stamp 2 permission to remain are allowed to take up casual employment. They can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and up to 40 hours a week in the holidays. Holiday periods have been standardised – June to September inclusive and from 15 December to 15 January. Students with stamp 2A permission are not allowed to work.
  • NUI Galway has over 82 Student Societies, offering you great opportunities to meet people with similar interests, try new things and have fun.
  • Sport is central to life at NUI Galway and our excellent facilities offer you a chance to balance your academic study with a wide range of sporting activities.

There are a number of differnt accommodation options available to you:

  1. Student Residences

There are 2 student residences on campus; Corrib Village and Goldcrest Village which opened in September 2018. These residences are University-owned. 

Our new, state-of-the-art student residence, Goldcrest Village, is comprised of 429 en suite bedrooms across 76 non-smoking apartments. There are 3 apartment types. 

Corrib Village is a gated complex, which is located on the NUI Galway campus, consists of 176 non-smoking apartments and accommodates 764 students

    2. On-Campus Accommodation Bursaries

The University plan to make available a number of Accommodation Bursaries for Students to cover part or all of their accommodation costs based on their specific needs.  

We are developing the model so it will be administered to target those most in need, in line with the University’s progressive policies around financial aid and broadening access.


Corrib Village and Goldcrest Village

There are also 8 privately-owned student residences located off campus but within easy reach of the University.

  • Work placement is a work based learning module that is embedded in certain programmes in NUI Galway. It enables you to gain valuable work experience for your CV and to learn new skills in the work environment. This helps to improve your employability for the future. This work-based learning programme is obligatory and failure to complete PEP satisfactorily may delay your graduation.

Student Support Services

  • Accommodation and Welfare – The Accommodation and Welfare team assist you to find advice and support on accommodation and financial matters
  • Chaplaincy – The Chaplaincy Service is available to support students and staff remotely during normal working hours and outside of working hours, when required.
  • Counselling – You can consult with a member of the NUI Galway counselling service for any issue. We provide skilled listeners who have experience dealing with all the challenges students encounter
  • Career Guidance – The Career Development Centre aim to provide a quality career guidance and information service focused on facilitating and empowering you to manage your own career development and make effective career transition
